The original Suspiria from 1977 is a sensory explosion. It has insane coloring, almost neon-like. The soundtrack by Goblin is outstanding in itself. The atmosphere, the set, the images, the witches, the heavy rain. A few spectacular deaths. The shitty acting and the ridiculous dialogue. Very Italian and very awesome. A movie you will never forget. A Dario Argento masterpiece.
This new remake by Luca Guadagnino isn't really a remake. It is more fair to say it has been inspired by the original movie, but it doesn't try to copy it. There are many differences between the 2 movies, but the new movie is still about a new dancer coming to a German dance academy and it is still about witches.
The story now takes place in the divided Berlin in 1977 instead of in Freiburg. It has a couple of gory scenes that I imagine weaker people will find a bit hard to watch. It combines dancing scenes with horrific body disfigurement. Quite interesting concept to watch. The actors (including Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Chloë Moretz) unsurprisingly do a far better job than those in the original movie. The protagonist from the original movie Jessica Harper has a small role in the new movie too.
The movie is slow-paced and rather long and it is simply too "arty-farty" for me. I generally like witch movies, but I didn't really feel this one. I liked the original much better. The new soundtrack by Radiohead singer Thom Yorke didn't really blow me away either like the original Goblin soundtrack did.
It's not a bad movie and I don't regret going to the cinema to see it today, but I must admit, it felt a bit underwhelming. I guess I just had expected something a little more spectacular.
