I rewatched the TV Mini-Series version of "It" from 1990 a few weeks ago. It had a great part one with the kids and their internal relationship, a brilliant Pennywise "clown" [Tim Curry], and a terrible part two with lousy acting and lousy special effects. Particularly the ending sucked, but that was a problem it had inherited from the book.
This new 2017 remake is also planned as 2 movies. This first movie deals with the kids and their first meeting with evil Itself. The kids do a fine job most of the time (a few panic attack scenes excluded), but compared to the old movie, I think I prefer the old one. Sophia Lillis was really great as Beverly Marsh though.
The new Pennywise [Bill Skarsgård] is different. It's always difficult to follow an already iconic character, but I kinda like the new one too. The special effects are obviously way better than in the old movie, and the violence and gore is more explicit. Don't expect a true horror movie though, it's still mainstream Hollywood and always more entertaining than scary. Some of the scenes are a little bit too stupid, where the kids keep getting split up and behaving illogical, but that is not exactly unknown in movies that rely on jump-scares.
The biggest question was, would the new movie include a hot gangbang scene with Beverly and the 6 boys? Sadly not. I'm sorry to be the destroyer of all your hopes and dreams. Just how fitting would The Cure's "
Six Different Ways
" have been for this scene?
I was never in doubt that they could do a succesful remake of part one, and they didn't fail. The real question is however, will they be able to better the terrible part two from the original? With the reimagined look of Its lair and way better special effects, they may actually have a good chance. If the actors and dialogue deliver, and particularly with a rewritten ending, they may even succeed. For now, we'll all just have to float down here, until the new movie is finished.
