Let's do some math:
Tim Burton = cool; Johnny Depp = cool; Musical = horrible;
Burton + Depp = super cool
Burton + Depp + Musical = horribly cool?
Let it be known to mankind that I hate musicals. This is the first musical I've seen in it's entirety, and it will most likely be the last. Burton is a fantastic director and he creates fantastic sets. London of old looks fantastic in cool dark colors. Depp (Todd) and Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs. Lovett) act great, and so do most of the actors in this musical. There is plenty of blood, and typically for Burton it seems more like a play and totally surreal, but it still works and looks fantastic. The sense of dark humor in this musical is also great.
What makes me dislike it is that the concept of actors singing their lines is simply ridiculous. The music is rather awful, and most of the songs are either awful or ridiculous or both. Worst singing performance goes to Jayne Wisener (Johanna) performing a song that makes you want to cut your own throat with a razorblade, just to avoid listening to the rest of the song. My problem with this movie is probably down to the simple fact that I hate musicals but I love Burton's movies and Depp's acting.
When you mix something cool with something horrible, I'm afraid that you won't get something that is horribly cool. If this had been a real movie instead of a musical, I'm pretty sure it would have been really cool. But being a musical it simply isn't that.
