This new 'Zilla movie is certainly better than Emmerich's pile of shit "Godzilla" [1998], but that doesn't make it a good movie. The story is simple, built on ridiculous coincidences and all layered with and covered in Hollywood sentimentality and happy family reunions.
The hero is Mr. Kick-Ass [Aaron Taylor-Johnson] aka Lieut. Ford Brody and even though he is part of some kind of military bomb squad, he is also a brilliant parachuter and has the almost magical ability to always be where things are happening. Actually he is not the real hero of the movie. The real hero is a lot bigger.
If the movie is somewhat disappointing, at least they took the Godzilla "monster" seriously this time and the M.U.T.O. (parasitic Kaiju) creatures are not bad either. The movie is not exactly boring, but it is a bit too long, and all the big boss fights take place in near darkness from major clouds of dust. The 3D effects are okay, but adds nothing special. If you are looking for a tiny bit of refreshing humor in all that dust, then you are looking in vain, because there is absolutely none to be found.
If you want a good recent deep water monster movie, then "Godzilla"[2014] isn't the best choice. Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" [2013] was clearly a better movie.
