It feels sad seeing Marilyn Manson perform nowadays. He is a shadow of what he used to be on a stage. In truth it has become worse everytime I've seen him since I first saw him with an excellent performance in 1998 on the
Mechanical Animals
tour. Last night's show was a bit better than his awful performance at the
Copenhell festival 2012
here in Copenhagen. Not much better, but at least they tried.
The band seems to be playing to a backing track and Manson's voice is so worse for wear that much of the time he basically just screams. The show uses the same old tired effects we've seen billions of times and the setlists are rather uninspired. The first time they got some real applause from the audience was when they played the Depeche Mode and Eurythmics covers. Personal highlight for me was however
Coma White
, where at least it felt honest.
My advice to Manson would be either to quit playing live or preferable to strip it all down and go garage rock. Play everything live, skip most of the stage effects, stop changing clothes after every song and find that aggressive and honest rock attitude again. To watch them as it is now is just a sad experience which is even sadder because I actually like the recent Manson albums. They just don't manage to transfer them to a great live experience. Luckily for us the next act
Rob Zombie
did a hell of a lot better.
