Really great sci-fi this one, by new director Neill Blomkamp and presented by Peter Jackson. Very interesting story which is not so easily predictable from the beginning, cool use of lots of documentary style camera (and 10.000 times better used than in the lousy Cloverfield) and really exciting action.

A large spacecraft stranded on earth right above Johannesburg, South Africa some 20 years ago. The millions of alien passengers, known as prawns, are now being kept isolated in a large area of slum. It is when the main character, the complete jerk Wikus Van De Merwe(played by Sharlto Copley) and his men enter the area that the story kicks off, and I won't reveal any of it. There is not many things to like about Wikus and that goes for all the human beings in this movie. Not that the aliens seem a lot more charming to be honest. There is no well-known actors at all in this movie and that is only a plus, not being distracted by well-known faces.

If you want to, you can find lots of similarities to apartheid and some races exploiting others, but it ain't being rammed down your throat and you can choose and draw your own conclusions. Nice for a change, since that is not the way a lot of directors make movies.

The movie is rather low budget, but it doesn't really look like it. The special effects are really great and more importantly they are not overdone. This movie is not a typical Hollywood CGI overkill action movie. There's plenty of action and fast pace, but the movie primarily relies on it's well-thought story. The movie has a great sense of humour too, making it easy to digest.

It's been a very well spent 1h45 in the cinema today, apart from the always enjoyable Coke and popcorn. Nice to see a movie with fresh and new ideas for a change. Recommended!
