Swedish Vandöd had the tough task as support act and with Mayhem's massive drum kit in the background The Rock's small stage didn't offer them much room to perform in and the sound wasn't on their side either. Also I never figured out what the hell the singer was doing with his beloved clay pot??? End result: not very impressive.
Norwegian Black Metal kings Mayhem took over and played an ok gig. They didn't have any pig heads on stakes or anything like that as they had when I saw them at The Roskilde Festival some years ago. The singer however was dressed as a mummy during the whole gig and it must have been hot as freakin' hell! It was damn hot even without being dressed up like that...
I'm not much of a Mayhem expert and I haven't heard their new album "Ordo Ad Chao" but I did recognize one or two songs from their great "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" album and generally I liked most of the songs they played.
The Rock is not exactly the best venue in town (being too small in many ways including the stage area) but you must give them credit for booking a lot of cool bands that you wouldn't hear otherwise. Mayhem did well and I'd gladly go see them again next time they're in town.
